Video Calibration FAQ's
Frequently-Asked Questions
I just spent a lot of money on a new display. Isn’t it already calibrated?
Video displays are rarely tuned before shipping from the manufacturer. Even worse, they may be intentionally tuned for retail lighting, making them far too bright and possibly shortening the life of the display. Once arriving at a retail store, they are not professionally calibrated for your home or office environment.
The company that installed my TV changed the settings. Isn’t that enough?
No. At best, the installer who delivered your TV adjusted the standard user controls until the display looked "right". After a few weeks of normal operation, the system ages and will often look different. In fact, manufacturers recognize that your system can look its best and last its longest only when it is professionally calibrated after a short initial aging period.
Can I calibrate my Own Display?
There is science behind the colours you see on your screen. Colours are meant to adhere to exacting standards, especially with high-definition images. Tuning your display 'by eye' cannot achieve the same results as instrument-based calibration.
Who should have a video display professionally calibrated?
Calibration benefits home-theatre enthusiasts, serious gamers, graphic artists, and anyone else who demands the best performance from a video display.
Why Should I calibrate?
Factory and showroom settings are usually set far too bright for normal household viewing. Calibrating your display will not only make it look more lifelike and accurate, but it will also lengthen the life of your display and its internal components. The best way to set contrast is with an accurate light meter and/or color analyzer. Most consumers don't have such equipment.
